Douai Abbey

Douai Abbey is a Roman Catholic monastery of monks of the English Benedictine Congregation, and under the patronage of Saint Edmund, King and Martyr. They were founded in Paris in 1615. Uprooted by the French Revolution they settled at Douai in Flanders, and finally returned to England in 1903, settling at Woolhampton. Douai monks still serve in parishes throughout England.

The monastery welcomes guests on many different retreats or courses, including Loving 4 Life as well as those who seek space for quiet or study.

Second Retreat

October 2nd-4th 2020

The Dowry House Walsingham

 47-49 High Street, Walsingham, Norfolk, NR22 6BZ

(Please note this Retreat begins on the Friday evening)

Dowry House

Dowry House Retreat is situated directly opposite the Priory Gatehouse in the High Street. It was built between 1470 and 1496, and in the twelfth-century the Augustinian Priory used it as a pilgrim hostel.

During the 15th Century, Walsingham enjoyed the reputation of being one of the world’s most renowned shrines along with Jerusalem, Rome and Santiago de Compostela – and of all these, only Walsingham was dedicated to Our Lady. So pilgrims came from far and wide to honour Our Blessed Mother.

The Community of Our Lady of Walsingham was founded in the Slipper Chapel on the Feast of the Epiphany, 6th January 2004 with the aim of living and spreading the spirituality of Walsingham in-depth. As a contemplative, but not enclosed community, the sisters offer hospitality, spiritual accompaniment, retreats and formation to groups and individuals visiting the shrine.
